Sir Anthony John Compton-Thornhill (1868-1949), of Barham Hall, Ipswich, was a J.P. in Suffolk in 1891. He assumed by Royal Licence the additional name and arms of Compton, 1902.He served in the military as Captain & Hon. Major, Reserve of Officers, Prince of Wales Own, and in the Norfolk Royal Field Artillery, serving with the Royal Garrison Artillery from 1914-17. His porcelain collection was sold at Christie’s in April 1943.
