Gui or food vessel in bronze. Made in China, late 1st phase, Zhou Dynasty.

Measurements:
h: 5 in; diam of mouth: 6 5/8 in; w across handles: 12 1/4 in

Provenance:
Henry Brown collection; his sale, Sotheby’s, 25 March 1947, lot 85 (illus.), purchased John Sparks Ltd. for Sir William Burrell, £520; by whom gifted to the Corporation of the City of Glasgow, 1947.

Sir William Burrell, Purchase Book 1947(1) p.43: ‘An early Chinese bronze Kuei, the globular body contracted beneath the everted rim and supported on a high hollow foot, the double handles in the form of birds with boldly marked plumage and scrolling tails; the body decorated in relief with a band of bird motifs on a small thunder fret ground which is repeated on the foot. Dark green smooth patination. Yin-Chou Dynasty. 5" high 12 1/4" diam’.
